Thomas Jefferson's addition has the same cream-colored cinder-block walls and tiled hallway floors, the same squishy courtyard with a primary-colored play set as some of the other 4K academies. The school had the largest budget for its renovations - $7.4 million - which included a new cafeteria and several classrooms. The academy will serve the pre-kindergarten students in the district's south west corner, many will eventually attend Rib Mountain, South Mountain or Lincoln elementary schools. This addition was budgeted to cost $6.5 million. It includes a dedicated room for the occupational and physical therapy some students need.

Like some of the other academies there's a family resource room equipped with tables for meetings and inside toys for play when the weather is bad outside. It holds four 4K classrooms and an early-childhood classroom. The addition is shaped like a horseshoe, and a new primary-colored playground with a squishy-red surface on the ground fills a courtyard meant for the school's littlest students. Jones extends two stories high with fourth and fifth grade classrooms on the second floor and the younger kids on the main level.

Lloyd and Riverview Elementary Principal Andy Place both greeted parents with bags of tissues and children with over-sized backpacks at the front door of their schools Tuesday during open houses.

"It'll be nice that we'll get to know them before they come for a full day," Lloyd said. Pre-kindergarteners attend school for half days. The Wausau School District built four additions on its elementary schools to make room for pre-kindergarten students with funding from a $30 million referendum, approved by voters in April 2015.
